I had no idea you lived downtown! That's awesome. The one area I love about Pomona...other than CPP of course. I bet it was a challenge. But yeah, sounds like its definitely safe now. Thanks for reading Amanda. Hope to see you around!

Great article. I am a Cal Poly Pomona student living in the downtown area. Frankly, it was hard for me to find roommates originally because of the city's poor reputation. Either the girls themselves didn't feel safe, or their mothers would have encouraged their daughters to carry pepper spray. However, after living here for over a year I have fallen in love with the downtown. I regularly walk to the Pomona Bakery, farmer's markets and take my friends to the wine bar. I am happy to see the area growing and Pomona student's views changing. This is a great city with a lot of potential. All we need is a killer breakfast joint and a few more early morning coffee shops and you have me for life!

Nice work, Dan.

Glad to see this has gotten some readership from Pomona locals. I know most of you -- if not personally, then by name and appearance. Been to my share of council meetings and art walks. Hope the PBID continues to go well for the downtown...but what about the rest of Pomona? Is this something the owner's association can begin to help, even though it is out of its jurisdiction? -dan

I just read your article with interest.Your comment about downtown Pomona being an island of saftey is absolutely correct. If one were to take the time to study crime reports for the entire city of Pomona versus just the downtown (or PBIB)you would be amazed. Downtown Pomona is in fact one of the safest districts in the entire state of California according to Deptartment of Labor and FBI statistics. That's impressive. But it doesn't come without a cost. Monetarily, security is the largest item in the PBID's budget and will continue to be.

In a realatively short span of time the PBID has partnered with responsible property owners, businesses, and city hall to focus on what is good about Pomona and make it stick. In time it is the hope of all that the rest of Pomona will share the downtown's good fortune. So, as we like to say often. Come to downtown Pomona, we'd love to show you around!
